When Pinterest Goes Wrong: The Best Of The Worst Pins
Before I say anything, I’d like to add a disclaimer: I do use Pinterest, and I like it a lot. However, sometimes people pin the ugliest crafts and projects. This, my friends, is the beauty of Web 2.0. And the beauty of writing for Feminspire? I get to expose them all!
This is the pin that started it all; the pin that made me shudder inside and realize that I had to share all the ugly, WTF pins with the world. I appreciate what this is trying to do; every girl wants to be able to see her makeup, which is hard to do when it’s unorganized in a basket. But slapping your makeup on the wall isn’t a great way, either. Your eyeshadow isn’t a refrigerator magnet – and it’s not art either, if that’s what’s being attempted here. If that’s the direction you want to go, at least work with some tasteful tones that don’t clash with your actual makeup (think neutrals) and organize them so it’s not cluttered (wasn’t that the point of this in the first place?)! It can be done!
The caption on this reads “put Legos in liquid soap for boys… for girls use Barbie shoes!!” When did soap become something that we needed to decorate? I mean, I’m all for a cute Lush chunk, but those are pretty and scented. This is just getting plastic sticky. And don’t get me started on the gender roles here: all boys aren’t architects and all girls aren’t fashion designers.
I’ve seen these shirts all over the place recently (and not just DIY, store bought as well) and I don’t really understand the appeal. I mean, it looks like you have a really wrinkly shirt and you didn’t have time to iron it before you left the house. Or like you were trying to dye a shirt yourself and you forgot to flatten it out first. Oh wait…
So this pin tells women how to fix their bras when an underwire starts poking out. Essentially the tip is to stick some moleskin over it where it’s ripped. Here’s the thing: if your bra is broken, just go buy a new one. Most women wear a bra every day. If you think of the bras in your regular rotation and do a cost-per-wear, you should be getting a lot of bang for your buck with your bras if you take care of them correctly. Cute bras that aren’t broken can be found at your local mall or online pretty cheaply: you don’t need to put ugly moleskin adhesive on a broken one. Spend twenty bucks on a new bra. It will make you feel better, and your boobs look better, I promise.
So I understand crocheting is, like, the cool craft nowadays, but isn’t there a line? Not that I really understand the whole dressing animals up thing anyway. But really, why are we dressing this poor dog up like a baby from the 1800s… and in quite unfortunate colors, at that?
