VMAs Whitewashed & Ignored LGBT* Artists – Who To Listen To Instead
There’s no question that the VMAs whitewashed and ignored LGBT* musicians and artists. So we asked our staff and readers on social media to contribute some of their favorite musicians the VMAs or mainstream media ignore who you should be listening to. Please add your favorites in the comments!
“One of the things I dig about that Lorde song is the anti-consumerism message and being about time with friends, enjoying each other and your experiences, and not chasing after cash or money or fame.” – Sara
“Let’s remember Janelle Monae, who won for her video for art direction and who is nothing short of brilliant!!” -Taylor
“Brooklyn based rapper Le1f made headlines last summer with the release of the video for his song ‘Wut.’ A Wesleyan grad, the 6’3 rapper quickly earned features all over the Internet, from the Daily Beast to Pitchfork to Gawker. Not all of the press was positive, though—a lot of hate tweets, hate comments, and hate headlines rolled in, admonishing the artist for his openly gay lyrics and videos.
I’ve seen Le1f live, and he’s awesome. He’s gigantic and fully of energy, and he was a great dancer. Check out the video for ‘Wut’ below.” – Zoya
“The singer of the hook in ‘Same Love’ just put out an awesome video of a lesbian love story. The whole crew in the making of the video was even made up of queer women. She’s white, but I think she’s worth mentioning.” – Mansi
“Wacklemore didn’t even have Mary Lambert speak on stage. She is an out lesbian and the woman who sings on his track. It would have been cool to actually have HER speak about LGBT rights instead of the straight dude.” – Estee
