While the jury is still out on who was best dressed at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony, the prize for most adorable clearly went to Quvenzhané Wallis, the nine-year-old Best Actress nominee who had critics raving about her breakout performance in Beasts Of The Southern Wild. Miss Wallis shined on the red carpet in a lovely Armani dress with matching shawl, and jeweled headband by Forevermark. But the cutest part of her look was not the custom dress or the fit-for-a-princess headband –– it was the puppy purse!
The purse, which has become her signature red carpet accessory, was made by Poochie & Co., and the company has unsurprisingly reported a massive increase in sales since Wallis’s appearance at the Academy Awards. Although her stuffed Yorkie pup with its silvery tutu and sparkling tiara was designed for her specifically, similar options including a cocker spaniel, bull dog, and poodle are available for purchase.
And if you enjoy the idea of an animal-shaped handbag, but you’re over the age of nine and feel a little silly about buying an accessory presumably designed for a child, have no fear –– there are many covetable variations in existence that do not look as though they were created exclusively for the kids’ department.
Dolls Kill sells a cuddly Joyrich teddy bear bag that comes with a detachable metal and leather strap.
And my personal favorite is this amazing Alice + Olivia zebra bag that just debuted at the brand’s NYFW presentation a few weeks ago, and will hopefully be available soon.
Some are a bit more subtle than others, but it’s always fun to add a touch of childlike whimsy to your ensemble. So follow Quvenzhané Wallis’s lead and make a statement with an animal bag!
