Get Your Garter On: Garter-Inspired Legwear
Garters are usually reserved for behind-the-scenes kind of action. There’s something incredibly taboo about them; they carry around this sexual stigma. I remember being with a friend who was purchasing garters, and she immediately turned on stealth-speed-shopper-mode, as though she didn’t want anyone witnessing this oh-so-shameful item!
No way should we be ashamed of buying garters– or even wearing them. It’s funny that these little strips of fabric, strategically placed just so, can make such a statement to society. Isn’t it ironic that garters will earn you more stares than if you were to wear, say, a mini skirt, which would actually show more skin? Oh, these connotations!
Let’s say to heck with taboo and wear this new trend with pride. It’s cheeky. It’s definitely daring. Fashion is supposed to be fun. We’ve done the mesh leggings. We’ve done the leather leggings. It’s time for something new.
Here are a few suggestions for outfits and occasions incorporating garters. The trick is to make sure you’re not walking around in something that looks like a costume. It’s all about contrast and balance.
Running to the grocery store, the bank and all of those super special places? It’s okay to add some funk to your look while you’re out and about completing daily chores. Pair garter leggings with an oversized band tee and a flannel shirt. Top off the look with lace up boots. It’s a little bit grunge – and a little bit rock and roll. Plus, you can always tie the flannel around your waist for a nod to the 90′s.
Fancy Pantsy Occasion
Ready to hit the party scene? Throw on some garter leggings or garter tights with a frilly party dress– something light and airy. If you pair it with something too tight, short or sexy, it’s going to look like you’re wearing a costume. Embrace the contrast. You’ll be showing off some sweet and sassy style with one look. Finish the look with platform shoes.
Casually Cool Day
Meeting friends for coffee? Going to a low key event after work? Wear your garter leg wear underneath a bodycon skirt and top off with a graphic tee and draped cardigan. It’s playful and more fun than wearing basic leggings. You’ll have a lot of patterns and textures contrasting one another. Top off the look with colorful or patterned sneakers.
Have fun with these looks. Make them as funky or conservative as you want to. Mix patterns and colors. Get weird. Get wild. Take some risks in your life from head to toe! There’s no better place to start than with your leg wear, right?
