In today’s world, there are few things that can be readily agreed upon. However, I can think of two that are (pretty much) a given:
1. The Israeli/Palestinian conflict is an enormous tragedy.
2. Buzzfeed articles can be really damn annoying.
I won’t get into the details of what’s going on between Israel and Palestine in this article, because I don’t understand it well enough to do the subject justice (if you want to better understand the history of what’s going on, the Council on Foreign Relations has an awesome interactive timeline). What’s happening in that region is terrible for everyone involved, and that’s an understatement.
When I saw this Buzzfeed article on my Facebook feed (thanks to my fellow Feminspire writer Alicia Perez who wanted to point out how godawful it was), I don’t know if I was surprised. There’s a whole cult of people who don’t like Buzzfeed, and they have lots of reasons why. The site has long been known for having problematic content and content that’s just plain annoying. They’re a content farm in every definition of the term.
But I don’t know if I expected this from them. I’m not necessarily surprised, because if anyone would publish an awful “article” like this, it’s them. But I just can’t believe ANYONE would think this was a good idea. (I’m not linking to the article because fuck that, so instead I’ll just share the screenshot taken by my friend Alicia.)
Yes. This is the ENTIRE article.
As Alicia pointed out in her post, the woman who “wrote” this (I could not use the word wrote more loosely) isn’t an intern or a new staff writer – she is an EDITOR. An editor of a site with millions of readers, who should REALLY know better.
Here’s a FACT about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict – hundreds upon hundreds of people have died since 2000. Yes, the subject is a complicated one. BEYOND complicated, I would say. But articles like this don’t do anything to help (I mean, clearly). They aren’t funny (like, I still don’t get the point – was I supposed to laugh?). They are the definition of lazy, cold-hearted content production.
As the top commenter put it,
“As little as I think of whoever writes for this website, I know people are senselessly dying every day because of what is happening with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Excuse me for not finding even one shred of humor in using this as some form of clickbait.”
Sure, Buzzfeed has some legitimately good writers on staff, and I’ve found some of their posts to be cute or interesting. This isn’t to rail on everyone over there, but when a site decides to get traffic by making light of an issue like this, an issue that so many of us LEGITIMATELY have questions about, we have a problem. Instead of using an opportunity to educate, they decided to go a different route. And that’s their call – but there will be no more Buzzfeed for me.
