I’ve never been a big fan of pre-packaged costumes. This definitely stems from my desire to win the candy prize for “most creative” costume in elementary school. Let’s just say I’ve personified a great deal of architectural monuments in my day. But I’ve continued this creative tradition long after the candy prizes went away. I love being able to express myself though a costume and inject some of my own wit into it as well. Dressing up as a badass woman is an awesome way to achieve this!
Most of these costumes can be achieved by just putting together items from your own closet or only purchasing an item or two! These are perfect for throwing something fabulous together last minute or if you’re on a budget.
Masquerading as the Mexican artist Frida is perfect for anyone who loves thrifting or art! Put on a bright floral dress and bright shawl or scarf. Pile on lots of gold jewelry, the chunkier the better. Braid a big pink ribbon into your hair and make sure to draw on her signature unibrow. Carrying around art supplies will also help complete this look.
Rosie the Riveter
An American feminist icon, a Rosie the Riveter costume is super easy to pull together. Thrown on a denim top and high waisted denim shorts (jeans are fine, too). Put your hair up in a red handkerchief; rock a retro red lip and you’re set! Make sure to flash your bicep as often as possible.
You get to pay homage to a badass female character and rock a corset? What could be better?! To get this Easy A inspired look, pair a corset or corset top with some black skinny jeans. Throw on some wayfarers, black heels, and a strand of pearls. Don’t forget to rock a red ‘A’ to finish the look!
Portraying this American aviatrix is easy! Grab a brown bomber jacket and pair it with white slacks and brown boots. Tie a white flowy scarf around your neck, pick up a pair of goggles at a costume shop and wear them on top of your head. A compass, toy airplane, or portable wind machine will also help complete the illusion.
This Legally Blonde character is a girly girl, but she still knows she doesn’t need a man to complete her and rises to the top of a male-dominated profession to achieve valedictorian honors at the Harvard law school. To pull off the Elle look, pink is definitely the default color. Wear a feminine pink dress with high heels. Make sure your nails are perfectly done and carry around a notebook and pink sparkly pen to take studious notes. Printing off the Harvard logo and putting on your notebook is a great detail. Make sure you top it off with a stuffed animal Chihuahua! Elle loves her little dog Bruiser!
There are TONS of badass women to embody on Halloween! These are just five examples of both real and fictional badass women to dress up as. Give us some of your own suggestions in the comments!
